In this freezing stream bubbling over rocks sits
Something tired and full of knots
The only thing in this landscape That won't float and calmly wash away

This surface foam, like spittlebug eggs reflecting star-shaped points of light
Over the sandy pebbles and lines
The water's shadows streaming in parallel waves below

Fluid so gently breaking the light in pale waves of pattern that never repeat twice
Everything is constant, disinterested, moving about, going down through a tunnel and coming out

All but the things circling madly around
In a whirlpool of leaves that can't get out
And somebody sitting motionless above

I put my feet in this pool until I think my bones have turned to milky ice
And my purple toenails no longer feel like mine
The colder I get the less alone in my mind (x3)

Water rushing through those tiny hairs on the naked skin
Just like it moves through straight green grass on the bank
With a perfect direction that doesn't change

And I know I could've been anything
That my soul is not mine
But the core of an oak
Whose body burned and billowed smoke
Whose ashes scattered on the wheat
And fed the grains my mother ate

Now I'm calm in the sun
Watching gentle waters moving along (x3)
